A no-cost extension may be requested when a grant is ending and additional time is needed to accomplish project goals. No-cost extensions generally fall into one of two categories:
- Grantee-approved no cost extensions. For many federal grants, Emory has the ability to review and approve no-cost extensions unilaterally. We then provide only notification to the agency that an extension has been approved. For grantee-approved no-cost extensions, only the completed/signed Prior Approval Form, including the scientific justification for the extension, is necessary. Please submit no later than 10 days prior to the current end date.
- Agency-approved no cost extensions. In these cases, Emory must submit a letter to the agency and receive approval from the agency before any extension can be processed in Compass. Principal Investigators must draft a letter to the agency requesting the extension and providing justification of the need for the extension. Attach the letter to the completed/signed Prior Approval Form when submitting the request. Please submit the request no later than 45 days prior to the current end date.
