Memorandum

The University Research Committee (URC) application forms are now available in interactive portable document format (iPDF). This format is compatible with both PC and Macintosh computers. Please read these instructions carefully before entering data and printing the form.

Instructions

Use of these forms requires users to have access to the following software:

  • Adobe Acrobat 4.0 or
  • Acrobat Reader 4.0 or
  • Adobe Acrobat 3.x and Acrobat Forms Author Plug-in 3.5 or
  • Acrobat Reader 3.x and Acrobat Forms Fill-in Plug in.

Please note that if you are using Acrobat Reader you will be able to fill-in and print the forms, but you will NOT be able to save the completed form or perform other types of functions. Acrobat reader can be downloaded free from the Adobe web site (http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html). To save the forms, you must be using Adobe Acrobat.

Completing the Form

Before filling-in the form go to the file menu, then select "save as." Then assign a directory and name. The extension for the file should be .pdf. This will preserve the original template for later use.

To begin, place your cursor over the field in which you wish to begin typing and click in the field. When over an interactive field, the cursor changes from a hand to the text indicator icon.

You may press the TAB key to move to the next field or you may place the cursor over the field to which you wish to move and click in that field. Do not use the ENTER key. Pressing the ENTER key will move the data you just input out of the viewing/printing range of the field and it will nto be displayed.

To place a checkmark in one of the option boxes, move the cursor over the box until it becomes a hand with only the index finger extended and click in the box. A checkmark will be automatically added to the box. To remove the checkmark place the cursor over the box and click again.

Budget

The total budget field on page one will fill-in automatically once the complete budget has been entered on page three. The complete budget on page three only requires that you enter the line items, the computer will add the amounts for the subtotals and grand total.

Please be sure to enter information into the template as completely as possible. URC requires this information to properly process your application.

Saving the form

After you have completed entering data into the form, you may save it if you are using Adobe Acrobat 4.0 or Acrobat 3.x and the Acrobat Forms Author Plug-in 3.5. If you are using Acrobat Reader 4.0 or Acrobat Reader 3.x and Acrobat Forms Fill-in Plug-in, you will be able to print the forms, but not save them.

To save the form, go to the file menu, then select "save as." Then assign a directory and appropriate name for this application. The extension for the file should be .pdf.
